An unusual and devastating workplace accident left an 18-year-old man with a severe cervical spine injury after a heavy metallic pipe suddenly fell onto his head.

The case was documented in the *Journal of Orthopaedic Case Reports* in September 2022 by doctors in India. According to the report, the young man was standing at his workplace when the large, heavy object struck the frontal region of his head. The impact caused a serious flexion-compression injury to his cervical spine.

When he arrived at the emergency department, he was in shock and experiencing respiratory distress. Medical staff intubated and resuscitated him, while a cervical collar was applied to stabilize his neck. Doctors noted that he was unable to voluntarily move his limbs.

Imaging revealed a rare spinal injury involving the fifth cervical vertebral body, known as C5. The vertebral body had been pushed backward, a condition called retropulsion, and there was also a fracture involving the sixth cervical vertebra (C6). A frontal brain contusion was also identified.

Doctors attempted to relieve pressure on the spinal cord with cervical traction. However, because of the patient’s extremely poor general condition, immediate surgery could not be performed.

Sadly, the young man died two days after the accident. The authors described the injury as an unusual form of flexion-compression trauma and emphasized how potentially life-threatening cervical spine injuries can be.

The case highlights the importance of workplace safety measures, particularly in environments where heavy machinery, pipes, or other large objects are handled overhead. Even a single falling object can cause catastrophic injuries to the head, spinal cord, and neck.
