For generations of fans, one voice stood above the rest—a deep, commanding yet remarkably gentle voice that made heroes feel larger than life. Peter Cullen, the legendary Canadian voice actor best known as the voice of Optimus Prime, has died at the age of 85.

Cullen passed away on August 26, 2026, at his home in Los Angeles, surrounded by his family. His cause of death has not been publicly disclosed.

His legacy, however, goes far beyond the world of *Transformers*. Cullen first gave Optimus Prime his unmistakable voice in the original 1984 animated series, creating a character whose strength was balanced by compassion, dignity, and wisdom. He later returned to the role for numerous *Transformers* projects, including the live-action films beginning in 2007.

Cullen was also beloved as Eeyore in *Winnie the Pooh*, giving the gloomy but lovable donkey a voice that became instantly recognizable to millions of children. His career included more than 200 credits, with memorable work in *Knight Rider*, *Predator*, *King Kong*, *G.I. Joe*, and many other productions.

Perhaps most fittingly, Cullen’s portrayal of Optimus Prime was inspired by his older brother Larry, a Vietnam veteran, who encouraged him to remember that a true hero should be “strong enough to be gentle.” That philosophy became part of the character—and part of Cullen’s enduring legacy.

Peter Cullen may be gone, but his voice will never truly disappear. For countless fans, hearing Optimus Prime speak will always bring back memories of childhood, imagination, courage, and a simpler time.
