Absolutely tragic 💔
Haneen and Revan’s wedding day in Qaraqosh, Iraq, turned into a devastating tragedy when a fire broke out at their reception, killing over 100 guests and injuring at least 150 others.
The couple was dancing in front of nearly 900 guests when the fire suddenly erupted, reportedly starting in the ceiling. Revan told Sky News he heard crackling before the nylon ceiling began melting. “Only a few seconds were needed,” he said. Initial reports blamed fireworks, but Revan suspects an electrical short circuit.
Panic quickly spread. Revan tried to pull Haneen to safety as people trampled over each other. She suffered leg injuries, and her family was devastated—losing ten members, including her mother and brother. Her father sustained severe injuries.
The venue only had one ineffective fire extinguisher. Survivors described how the fire consumed the hall in moments, with parts of the building collapsing. Later investigations revealed the ceiling was made of highly flammable material, violating safety codes.
Fourteen people were arrested in connection with the incident, including those responsible for setting off the fireworks. Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani vowed strict penalties and increased public safety checks.
Traumatized and heartbroken, the couple has since left their hometown. “We are dead inside,” Revan said. Haneen has not spoken since the event.
This horrific event has left a permanent scar on what should have been the happiest day of their lives. It serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of poor safety regulations and indoor fireworks.
