Woman Loses Her Legs Due To Common Household Product, Now She’s Warning Women Everywheređ«đ±
*Note: We are republishing this story, which originally made headlines in July 2023.*
At just 24 years old, **Lauren Wasser** â a rising model with a bright future â nearly lost her life to **Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS)**, a rare but deadly infection linked to tampon use. What began as flu-like symptoms quickly spiraled into a medical nightmare that left her fighting for her life â and ultimately cost her both legs.
Wasser shared her harrowing experience on *The Diary Of A CEO* podcast with Steven Bartlett. She recalled how, after days of feeling unwell, she was found unconscious in her Los Angeles apartment during a wellness check by her mother. Her fever had soared to 107°F, leading to a **massive heart attack, organ failure**, and a diagnosis that few doctors initially recognized. By the time TSS was confirmed, **gangrene had set in**, forcing doctors to amputate her right leg to save her life.
The trauma didnât end there. After years of excruciating pain and multiple surgeries, Wasser made the heartbreaking decision to **amputate her left leg** before turning 30. âI felt like I was burning from the inside out,â she once said. âBut I refused to let this disease take everything from me.â
Now known as **âfashionâs Girl with the Golden Legs,â** thanks to her striking golden prosthetics, Wasser has become a leading voice for womenâs health and transparency in feminine hygiene products. Sheâs campaigning for laws that require tampon manufacturers to **disclose all ingredients** â including potentially harmful chemicals like dioxin, chlorine bleach, and synthetic fibers.
Working alongside congresswoman **Carolyn Maloney** and other TSS survivors, Wasser hopes her story will save lives. âIf my pain can prevent even one person from going through what I did,â she said, âthen it was worth surviving.â
Her journey is a powerful reminder: beauty, strength, and purpose can rise even from unimaginable loss.
