When you hear the name Elizabeth Montgomery, one role immediately comes to mind: Samantha Stevens from the beloved 1960s sitcom *Bewitched*. Though she passed away in 1995, the beautiful and talented actress remains a household name today, remembered for her natural beauty, charm, and enduring legacy.
**A Star is Born**
Born in 1933 to Broadway actress Elizabeth Bryan Allen and popular actor Robert Montgomery, Elizabeth seemed destined for the stage. “Dad tells me I often climbed on his lap after dinner and remarked, ‘I’m going to be an actress when I grow up,'” she recalled in a 1954 interview.
Her father became both her mentor and toughest critic. “I’ll be real honest and say that Daddy did help me get a break in TV,” she admitted. “He’s my most severe critic, but also a true friend as well as loving father.”
Elizabeth made her television debut as a teenager on her father’s show, *Robert Montgomery Presents*. She transitioned to Broadway in 1953 and made her film debut in *The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell* in 1955.
**The Magic of Bewitched**
Though she appeared in *Alfred Hitchcock Presents*, *The Twilight Zone*, and *The Untouchables*, *Bewitched* became her crowning achievement. The show ran for eight seasons from 1964 to 1972, cementing her status as television royalty.
After *Bewitched* ended, Montgomery became the “Queen of TV movies,” starring in acclaimed films like *A Case of Rape* (1974) and *The Legend of Lizzie Borden* (1975).
**A Tragic Loss**
Elizabeth fought a long battle with colon cancer. Though she briefly believed she’d beaten it, the cancer spread to her liver. She died peacefully in her sleep on May 18, 1995, at her Beverly Hills home with family by her side.
Author Herbie J Pilato said, “Elizabeth went from queen of the witches to queen of the TV movie—it was no longer a struggle to break away from *Bewitched*.”
We cherish the memories she left behind. May she rest in peace.
