It’s truly shocking how cruel some people can be to dogs. These innocent animals too often endure senseless pain and suffering.

That was the case for Buddy, a “happy and carefree dog” who was the victim of a horrible attack in which his face was severely burned. But thankfully, he has since made a miraculous recovery, thanks to kind veterinarians.

**A Horrific Attack**

In April 2021, the Tunica Humane Society in Mississippi reported that Buddy was set on fire. He was found with his face completely scorched and charred black, with an extension cord wrapped around his neck.

According to WTVA, a child later confessed to setting Buddy on fire, but because he was younger than 12, he couldn’t be prosecuted.

**A Long Road to Recovery**

Buddy received medical treatment from Mississippi State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Despite the shocking injury, doctors believed his eyes were still intact, though his eyelids would need surgical repair.

“Buddy’s vital signs are good but, as with any burn patient, this is very much the bottom of a tall mountain to be climbed,” said Dr. Elizabeth Swanson. “We are keeping him comfortable, changing his bandages, and managing any problems as they arise.”

Through it all, Buddy kept a good spirit. He underwent skin grafts and slowly healed. “He continues to move forward daily,” the Humane Society wrote. “Never once disappointing his doctors.”

**A Breakthrough Moment**

On August 7, the rescue announced a “huge turning point”—for the first time in over three months, Buddy’s bandages were removed without heavy sedation, and he could actually see.

“In answer to your thousands of prayers, YES, Buddy can still see,” the Humane Society wrote.

“Buddy’s whole personality has changed since seeing the light of day,” said director Sandy Williams. “He is happy and playful and walking the halls with a great big ball in his mouth.”

**Looking Forward**

While Buddy will have special needs—including sunscreen, eye drops, and limited sun exposure—he’s returned to his joyful self.
