Multiple people were injured Tuesday afternoon following a serious seven-vehicle crash on Interstate 5 in the Portland metro area, according to local emergency officials.
The crash occurred around 4 p.m. on the northbound I-5 Nyberg Street off-ramp, prompting a large emergency response. Firefighters were initially dispatched after reports indicated that one vehicle had overturned and the driver was trapped inside. Upon arrival, police confirmed that several vehicles were involved and that a second individual was trapped in another car that had come to rest on its side.
Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews worked quickly to secure the scene and assist those trapped. Firefighters used specialized stabilization equipment, including struts and shoring devices, to prevent the damaged vehicles from shifting during the rescue. Both trapped individuals were safely removed from their vehicles but were reported to be in critical condition. They were transported to nearby hospitals for emergency medical treatment.
In addition to the two critically injured individuals, occupants from four other vehicles involved in the crash sustained minor injuries. Those individuals were evaluated at the scene and did not require hospital transport.
The crash caused significant disruption to traffic in the area as emergency crews worked to manage the scene, assist the injured, and clear the roadway. Motorists experienced delays while responders coordinated rescue efforts and ensured the safety of everyone involved.
Authorities have not yet released details regarding what led to the crash. The Oregon State Police will conduct a full investigation to determine the cause, including whether speed, road conditions, or other factors played a role.
No further information about the identities of those involved or the extent of their injuries has been released at this time.
