1-in-22-Million Kidney Match Found by Woman’s Doberman

A chance encounter on a Welsh beach reportedly led to an extraordinary kidney donation after a woman’s Doberman repeatedly approached a complete stranger.

Lucy Humphrey, from Caerphilly, had lived with lupus for years and eventually developed severe kidney problems that required dialysis. In 2019, she was reportedly warned that without a transplant, her future could be limited.

In June 2021, Lucy and her partner changed their weekend travel plans because she was feeling unwell and instead visited Cold Knap beach in Barry with their two Dobermans, Jake and Indie.

While the couple prepared a barbecue, Indie repeatedly wandered toward a woman sitting alone nearby. After calling the dog back several times, Lucy eventually approached the stranger to apologize.

The woman was Katie James, and a casual conversation soon became life-changing. Lucy mentioned her kidney failure and need for a transplant. Remarkably, Katie revealed that she had recently registered as a potential kidney donor and was willing to donate to anyone who needed one.

The women exchanged contact information and began the medical testing process. Against extraordinary odds, Katie turned out to be compatible. Lucy later said she was told the likelihood of finding such a suitable match was around one in 22 million.

After delays, the transplant finally took place in October 2022 at the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff. Despite some initial complications, the procedure was ultimately successful.

For Lucy, the encounter provided another chance at life. For Katie, donating a kidney became something she said she was incredibly proud of.

And at the center of their remarkable story was Indie—the persistent Doberman whose curiosity brought two strangers together at exactly the right moment.
