Magda Szubanski, one of Australia’s most beloved comedians, has long been known for her warmth, wit, and ability to connect with audiences. At 64, the Kath & Kim and Babe star is now sharing a very different side of herself—one marked by both vulnerability and resilience. Recently, Szubanski posted a video from her hospital bed, updating fans on her battle with stage-four mantle cell lymphoma, a rare and aggressive blood cancer.

In the clip, wearing a hospital gown and smiling gently despite visible fatigue, she delivered a heartfelt message to a young fan named Annabella from Adelaide. The 10-year-old had dressed as Sharon Strzelecki—Szubanski’s netball-loving character—for Book Week. “Thank you so much for your impression of Sharon Strzelecki,” she said warmly. “I’m in here having chemo and it really cheered me up.” Her short caption, however, captured the brutal reality: “Chemo is smacking me around right now.”

Szubanski first revealed her diagnosis in May after swollen lymph nodes were detected during a breast screening. With her trademark candor, she admitted, “It is one of the nasty ones.” Before beginning treatment, she shaved her head, sharing the moment publicly as an act of strength and acceptance.

Even while enduring grueling chemotherapy, she has leaned on humor and gratitude. “Don’t hug me, kiss me, or breathe anywhere near me!” she quipped to fans, urging them instead to wave from a safe distance. Messages of love have since poured in, with many reminding her of the joy she has brought into their lives.

Her openness offers a rare, honest glimpse into the reality of living with cancer. True to form, Szubanski continues to inspire—facing darkness with humor, courage, and an unshakable spirit.
