On Monday, July 28, a tragic mass shooting unfolded at 345 Park Avenue in New York City, leaving four people dead and one critically injured. Among the victims was NYPD officer Didarul Islam, a father of two with a third child on the way. The suspected gunman, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura of Las Vegas, entered the office building armed with an M4 rifle and opened fire before turning the weapon on himself.
Security footage captured Tamura arriving in a black BMW and entering the building, which houses major institutions like the NFLโs headquarters, Blackstone Inc., and KPMG. After taking the elevator to an upper floor, he began his deadly assault.
Authorities discovered a three-page note left by Tamura at the scene, which is being investigated as a possible suicide note. According to sources, the note referenced his struggles with Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), a brain condition linked to repeated head trauma. Tamura, reportedly a former competitive football player, also requested that his brain be studied after his death. Though he had a documented mental health history, Tamura questioned whether CTE was the root cause of his suffering.
Mayor Eric Adams expressed deep sorrow, calling the incident โanother senseless act of gun violence.โ He praised Officer Islam, an immigrant from Bangladesh, as a man of faith and a true New Yorker who gave his life protecting others.
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities search for more answers behind this tragic act.
