Bruising, or ecchymosis, happens when small blood vessels under the skin break, allowing blood to leak into surrounding tissue. This results in a visible mark that typically fades from deep purple to yellow-green as it heals. While most bruises come from harmless bumps or minor injuries, frequent or unexplained bruises can be a warning sign of an underlying issue.

**Common Causes of Bruising**

Everyday activities like bumping into furniture or exercising are common triggers. However, vitamin deficiencies—especially in vitamins C, K, D, B12, and folate—can weaken blood vessels or affect clotting, leading to more frequent or severe bruising.

Certain supplements such as fish oil, garlic, ginkgo biloba, and vitamin E may also thin the blood and make bruising more likely. Blood-thinning medications like aspirin, warfarin, or corticosteroids can contribute as well.

**Other Contributing Factors**

Aging and sun damage can thin the skin and weaken blood vessels, making bruises appear more easily. Serious medical conditions like diabetes, liver disease, or blood disorders (e.g., hemophilia or leukemia) may cause unexplained or excessive bruising that needs medical attention.

**How to Treat and When to Worry**

Use the RICE method—Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation—in the first 48 hours, then apply warm compresses afterward to boost healing. Avoid blood-thinning painkillers like aspirin; opt for acetaminophen instead.

See a doctor if you notice frequent bruising, large bruises from minor bumps, or bruises in unusual areas. Your body may be trying to tell you something important—don’t ignore it.
